ABOUT US
LW KARATE is a family run club with Derek Williams at the helm and the rest of his family, Donna, Kye, Megan and Hudson making up his instructors as well as a few others.
Derek Williams has been involved in Karate for the past 25 years and has been instructing students for the past 15 and he has always had the love and support of his family behind him. Unfortunately, in May 2020, Derek’s eldest son Leon, was tragically killed in a motorbike accident at the young age of 27 years, leaving behind a seven-month-old daughter. Obviously, this terrible loss left the family reeling and Leon’s passing was devastating for everyone.
Leon was always so full of life and a real joker, he had a huge orange beard and a smile that just lit up his face,
he really was the life and soul and he made everyone feel special. Leon and Kye were both so proud of their dad and all his achievements in Karate and every time they came from Birmingham to visit, they would be seen at the club watching and supporting from the sidelines. But the one thing that Leon and Kye couldn’t understand was why Derek didn’t run his own club. Every time they would come down to stay, they would jokingly say, “So have you done it yet Dad? You set up a club yet?”.
Following the loss of Leon, the entire family really struggled, but Derek in particular, found himself in a very dark place for many months. After a lot of counselling, Derek pulled the family
together and told them he knew what he was going to do. In memory of Leon, he was going to start his own Karate Club, and so LEON WILLIAMS KARATE CLUB was born. The club colour’s are bright orange to commemorate his big orange beard and in his honour, the entire family are involved.
Derek’s passion has always been in teaching, instructing and helping his karate-ka’s be the best that they can be. His firm but fair methods, meticulous instruction and his attention to detail turns out top class students that can compete with the best, both in Kumite and Kata at club level and on the competition circuit. We would like to think that Leon Williams would certainly be very proud.
